The Life of a JV

tout moun se moun

“Someday I’ll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney top that’s where you’ll find me
Oh, Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can’t I?”

~Israel Kamakawiwo Ole

If God causes you to suffer much, it is a sign that He has great designs for you, and that He certainly intends to make you a saint.

St. Ignatius Loyola (via fathershane)

“For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you.”

“The fact that any sort of religious faith was so disdained at Harvard and so important to the poor- not just in Haiti but elsewhere too - made me even more convinced that faith must be something good.”

“Medicine is a social science, and politics is nothing but medicine on a large scale. It is the curse of humanity that it learns to tolerate even the most horrible situations by habituation. Medical education does not exist to provide students with a way of making a living, but to ensure the health of the community. The physicians are the natural attorneys of the poor, and the social problems should largely be solved by them.”

- Rudolph Virchow

There was a shooting on our doorsteps today, three patients have died in the office in the last two months, and the drug trade around has grown exponentially. Why? Why is there this blatant disregard for Human dignity? I was walking to work this morning and I looked at the statue of Mary and was saddened by her state and her face. The Virgin is standing there on the corner, the blue hue washing away from her garments, and she is looking directly at the open drug market, at the pain and suffering…

During tonight’s reflection I couldn’t get one of the patient’s face out of my head. I had seen this man alive, and had fed him some soup at the office a little over a week ago, yet on Saturday he passed away from his illnesses. For some reason his face is ingrained into my memory, and I will never forget him. I will never forget his eyes as he ate his soup and I ate my lunch across the table from him. I will never forget his sarcasm at my requests to get him food stamps, nor his un-compliance in the maintenance of his health. I will never forget this man, though the world seemed to have, for within his eyes there was something deeper. Within his hardened heart there was hope. Hope for something that I could never give, yet something I have been blessed to be able to see.

There is life in this city, waiting to spring forth like the waters of a river overtaking a dam. For nothing that we humans build, whether physical or societal, will outlast the eternal, and no injustice will be everlasting.

“In your poverty save me, in your poverty embrace me, in your poverty fill me, that within your wounds I may be with you.”

“In your poverty save me, in your poverty embrace me, in your poverty fill me, that within your wounds I may be with you.”
